Colossal Biosciences is at the forefront of extinct species revival and on schedule to reanimate the woolly mammoth (mammuthus primigenius). You bet this is happening in our lifetimes.
A week ago the almost maniacally ambitious biotech company announced that the year of the mammoth will be 2028. This comes with the news that they, with their $1.5b budget, have in their microscope a line of Asian elephant stem cells that can be coaxed to transform into stem cells required to bring that extinct mommath back. This stem cell sequence being the most significant progress made to de-extinction ever since some mad scientists sequenced the woolly mammoth genes in 2015.
The task of reviving pure breed mammoths is still a dark complexity. Presently, the ethical and legal complaint department are on their last few years to sabotage the process.
The question is why would we re-introduce woolly mammoths on Earth. The answer is clearly because Kenntron, President, wants woolly mammoths on Mars.
